La Passionaria at the Jarama River
La Passionaria (Dolores Ibárruri) was a powerful and influential woman orator who inspired those fighting for democratic rights against the fascist forces of Franco during the Spanish Civil War. In this haunting moonlight image Carle Hessay, one of the volunteers who fought with the Partisans, records his impressions of her as she tries to lift the spirits of the troops at the Jarama River, east of Madrid.
