C Hessay: “Modern Galileo”
This was one of six paintings by Carle Hessay accepted by the juried show, Canadian Art Inspired by the Universe, 2009 (compiled by Gary Sedun, National Research Council, Herzog Institute of Astrophysics; see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYccYNzn1-k).
Terence Young's poem, “Observations,” inspired by this painting, was also included in the exhibition:
They rub their midnight hands
and in the cold
take turns to spy
on the moons of Jupiter
slaves to gravity
like everything else.
Like everything else
slaves to gravity
on the moons of Jupiter
take turns to spy
and in the cold
they rub their midnight hands.
