Carle Hessay: Kwan Yen
Kwan Yen (spelled variously) is the Chinese mother goddess of compassion and fecundity who sees and hears the sounds of the world. She protects seafarers, farmers, the lost, the senile, and the souls in the underworld.
In this spectacular painting, Kwan Yen is shown with a child on her back as she listens to her devotees and distributes largess.
